Fungal Infection

Common other terms based on location: 

• Tinea Pedis/Athlete's Feet
• Tinea Corporis (commonly called “ring worm”)
• Tinea Cruris/Jock Itch
• Tinea Capitis (commonly called “ring worm”) 

These are scaly, round, sharply demarcated lesions with raised peripheral borders and central clearing. They commonly are itchy. Based on the location they can appear on the body-Tinea Corporis, scalp-Tinea Capitis, feet-Tinea Pedis or groin-Tinea Cruris to name a few locations. All ages can be affected. Sources of infection can arise from another human, the soil or animals. 

Treatment 

Treatment can consist of topical antifungal agents such as: 

• Ciclopirox (Loprox)
• Clotrimazole (Lotrimin)
• Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
• Miconazole (Micatin)
• Terbinafine (Lamasil) 

Resistant, widespread or deeper fungal infections are treated with oral or systemic antifungals such as: 

• Griseofulvin (Fulvicin, Gris-peg)
• Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
• Itraconazole (Sporanox) (Onmel)
• Terbinafine (Lamasil) 

Along with topical agents.
